A New Jersey Beauty

Heather is such a beautiful soul and I was so honored when she asked me to photograph her.  Heather and I go way back.  When I was 6 years old she was in college at SMU and my mom found her through the sorority babysitter list.  Heather was probably the coolest college chick I’d ever known.  She nannied us all through college and we were all really sad to see her go.

One thing that I’ve always been really good at is keeping in touch with people who are important to me, people who have influenced my life, and people who I’ve met along my journeys.  So throughout the years Heather and I have kept in touch.  I was super bummed I never got to make the trip out to Oz where her hubby’s from, where she used to live and started her family. But we’ve kept in touch and I was fortunate to get to photograph her gorgeous self.

Enjoy the pics!

A Colorful Brand Shoot

I met this hot chika in Napa at a retreat back in October.  Breanne is such a fun personality and joy to be around so I was thrilled when she told me she was heading my way and wanted to do a shoot for her website.  And it was really fun for me to do something different, something super bubbly and joyful.

Bikinis & Body Confidence

I love Malia Mills and her message, “Love Thy Differences”, because we both have the same mission around empowering women in their bodies, we just have a different creative outlets for it. Malia designs these gorgeous bikinis, swimsuits, and clothing for all women’s bodies. And I take women through a process in which their true essence shines – in the healing work we do together and during the photoshoot. Malia’s tool is design, my tool is the camera.

I took the trip to NYC this May and happily, a date with Malia was on my list of adventures. I took the train from my Aunt’s upper West Side home all the way to Industry City, Brooklyn. I arrived at this massive concrete building with huge dock doors and 5 sets of double staircases to climb before reaching Malia’s headquarters. Malia’s sister, Carol Mills, opened the door and let me in. I was met with a huge open space, amazing textiles, and windows lining the walls allowing this amazing natural light to drench the studio.

I must say, that even though I do this work for myself all the time, I was still really nervous about getting in front of a camera in a bathing suit.

For me, photography becomes a process of really deep self healing; doing something uncomfortable and coming out on the other side of it and seeing how beautiful you are.

So there I was, standing in a bikini, lighting all around me and a photographer in front of me. Malia was over by the computer watching the images roll in. In-between shots Malia would tell me how great I looked and tell me what to do next. She directed the whole shoot and it was amazing to see her in her element of creation. She made me feel so comfortable and really confident in my body.

The photographic process can be uncomfortable, but in those places of discomfort I have learned more about myself and I am able to heal the insecurities that otherwise might just stay in the shadows.

Being in a bikini in front of a camera is never an easy place to be, but these images came out better than any other images that have been taken of me. When I came home I immediately gathered my favorites and had an album made with them, because I knew if I didn’t do it, it would never happen and I’d regret it. Being in vulnerable and raw situations can be really intimidating; and at the same time I was able to celebrate something in myself and wanted to make sure I captured and harnessed that before it went back into the shadows.

So as I think back on this transformative experience, I reflect on the butterflies in my stomach before I changed into my first bikini. I am able to witness the transformation that took place in Malia’s studio that day. I allowed myself to receive the gift that I give to my clients. I allowed Malia to guide me, and I confidently rocked the camera. The result, was better than I could have ever imagined. I saw my confidence staring me back in the face, I saw my amazing, curvy body in front of me. And there I was, Melissa, my full, joyful, confident self, shining back at me.

This is what I wish for every woman, and what Malia strives for her clients to feel when wearing her brand, and what I hope my clients see in themselves after working with me. It’s that women empower other women and that we offer ourselves opportunities that allow us to see our full beauty and selves.

Take a Step Inside One of my Photo-Shoots

I’ve been working on this video for the past few months, and am so excited to finally share it with you!  I wanted to give women the opportunity to step into one of my shoots so I created this behind the scenes experience and I also give you a little insight into why I do this work.

Big thanks to James Sibert Photography for capturing me doing what I love, for Katie McDonald being kind enough to allow 2 cameras in her face during her full day shoot, and to Rachel Miera, my amazing hair and makeup artist.

I think the video speaks for itself, so I hope you enjoy!  And thanks for taking the time to watch!

A Free Spirited Shoot

Katie was so fun to work with. From the very beginning she communicated to me how excited she was for her shoot and she continued to be just so enthusiastic about it. I knew I could really do absolutely anything with her and as a result her shoot day was a blast.  She was also kind enough to allow her shoot to be filmed for a behind-the-scenes video that you’ll see very soon!

Katie’s shoot may be one of my favorites to date.  We went from 9am-4pm and discovered new and amazing locations. We channeled her lost self, her inner badass, her seductress, her inner snow queen, and her angelic self. She is such a beautiful, brave, free spirit and it definitely comes across in her images.

Give me a “rawr” on the train tracks anyday

Amelie and I go way back…to the summer of 2008 when our men got deployed to Iraq with the USMC. I’d already met several other marine wives/girlfriends and one of them decided to have a party to get more of us together. I must admit that when I met Amelie at that party I may have been a little jealous…I mean she is drop dead gorgeous. It’s those damn French genes. She was quiet but fun, and I wanted to hang out more with her. We easily became very close friends and since then we’ve traveled together, had lots of laughs together, and I’ve had the opportunity to snap her on camera twice now.
I asked her a week before taking a trip back down to Lafayette to visit, if she’d be interested in a shoot. I’m so glad her answer was “yes”. Since she’d had a more traditional boudoir shoot with me before, I explained how different this one would be but that we’d have a lot of fun. Little did she know I’d have her literally rawring on the train tracks. We’d laugh, then rawr, then laugh some more. The whole day was a blast and her images came out stunning.

A Beautiful Environmentalist

I met Alyson almost 2 years ago now at an event in LA.  We ended up in a small group together, immediately clicked and have kept in touch ever since.  She is such an inspiring woman, she lives for a better environment and blogs about it too.  So when I received an email from her a few months back saying that she was making a trip out from sunny San Diego and wanted to spend several days hanging out I was thrilled.  To get the opportunity to photograph her as well was just the best.  Check out this beautiful woman!
